15 Primary Functions of Leadership in Management

Leadership accomplishes service, takes the decisions and makes efforts to know the reactions of other persons and it is such participation that is different from other persons.

What are the main functions of leadership? Various scholars, management experts, and organizations have stated different functions of leadership.

  • To communicate in the organization.
  • To get various functions performed from various persons.
  • To decide communication channels in own group.

Functions of Leadership in Management

In brief, the following are the functions of leadership in management:

1. To Achieve Group Discipline

The function of the leader is to make the group and its members disciplined and to penalize the persons violating discipline.

Not only that, the disciplined persons should be well appreciated and all personnel should be treated equally, power and Skills may be properly utilized for ensuring discipline.

2. To Build Morale and Self Confidence

Efficient leadership builds morale and generate self-confidence in the persons for doing good work.

The leadership inculcates new Outlook, New enthusiasm and new hopes among the persons.

3. Efficient Administration of Organization and Enterprise

Generally, directors, executives, administrators, managers, and departmental heads, senior officers, chiefs, etc. Constitute leadership in the organization.

But, here leadership carries out efficient administration of the Enterprise, in the form of administrators and managers.

For that, they may give the required orders. But, before doing it, their practicability, utility, and efficiency of the performing persons are kept in view.

4. To Plan and Give Exact and Clear Orders

The person leading is called “Leader“.

His function is to plan for his subordinates and give them exact and clear orders.

Here planning, exact and clear orders, means thinking well, before using such a communication system, for achieving the determined goals, so that communication may be easily understood, otherwise unnecessary clarifications will be sought causing wastage of time.

5. To Achieve Objectives and Goals of Organizations

A leader decides the objectives of the group and also ensures, how to achieve the objectives?

For that, he has to establish coordination in the functions of his followers, for getting the desired work done, by giving suitable instructions.

He manages the sequence of efforts and activities for his group.

6. To Develop Sense of Fraternity

The leader has also an important function of developing a sense of fraternity among the members of the group and for that the leader himself should become a part of the group, so that they may be able to win the cooperation and Goodwill of his followers.

7. To Keep Devotion Maintained towards Enterprise on Group

The functions of leadership are to keep the devotion of his followers and subordinates maintained towards the group.

While preparing plans for the enterprise, the leader should interact with the members of the group, so that the employees may treat that plan as their own and may work with a high degree of interest and enthusiasm to execute it fully.

8. To Inspire the Followers

Motivation is related to human relations, influenced by leadership.

Hence, a leader provides required inspirations to his followers, so that they may not only perform the desired tasks but may also feel inspired for willingly performing to the best possible extent.

9. To Take Initiatives

If the changes are to be introduced in the actions and behavior of the group, the initiative is to be taken by the leader.

He should make the members aware of the situations necessitating his institutes for changes.

He makes his followers understand the likely problems arising from the changes, develops the capacity of the workers to make initiatives, inculcates enthusiasm among the followers to face the problems and presents an example of Conduct before the followers.

10. To Understand Feelings and Problems of Subordinates

The functions of leadership in management are also to understand the feelings and problems of the subordinates, so that information may be available for making decisions regarding them and also to ensure that the subordinates feel mentally secure and satisfied.

11. Increasing Dedication and Guidance in Subordinates

The functions of leadership in business are to increase the dedication of the subordinates towards the collective objectives of the organization and to provide guidance to them for achieving the objectives, with the best possible method.

Functions that may be performed are as follows:

  1. To explain properly the schemes of the institution or department to the subordinates.
  2. To increase the dedication of the subordinates towards the schemes and objectives.
  3. To analyze properly the objectives and their reasons.

12. To Enforce Changes

The leader is the central point of the process of the changes.

He may easily enforce the changes, by taking his followers into confidence.

In the world of changes and uncertainties, business leadership is regarded as an important component of the process of changes itself.

13. To Recognize Efforts

The leader gives recognization to the excellent work and good performance of his employees and subordinates.

Through this, they not only get mental satisfaction but also feel inspired for doing, even more, better performance in the future.

14. Development of Group Feelings

The leader develops group feelings in his institution.

For that, he enforces control on individual and self-centered Outlook and organizes the group people as a group, in which all persons start feeling like an integral part of this group.

15. To Represent

The leader represents his followers and the institution.

So, in all meetings held by other parties, external organizations, and the government, he represents the correct picture of his subordinates and the institution.
